SENTENCE ON MALING APPEAL DISMISSED United Presi Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, 26th November. Silas Y. Maling's appeal to tho High Court against tho sentence of six months' imprisonment and a fine of £500. on the ground that the State Courts have no jurisdiction, was dismissed to-day.. Maling's counsel contended that tho offence, if airy, had been against tho Federal Act covering Secret Commissions, This point is being disposed of. Maling's next step is to appeal to the Quarter sessions now pending. Silas Young Mating, formerly dep-uty-manager of the Sydney City Elect trinity Department, and tho principal figure in the recent inquiry into allegn? tions of graft, was fined £500 and sentenced to six months' imprisonment for corruptly receiving £10,600 from Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd. Bail was allowed in the sum of £300, pending the hearing of his appeal.
