A meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council -was held last night, the Mayor, ■Mr. J". Robertson, presiding. Councillors J. R. Jameson, A. Howell, J. Blewman, W. Greig, G. H. Guthrie, J. K. Johnston, and C. L. A. Spearman were also present. The question of insurance on kerbside petrol pumps was again discussed, following the recommendation of a special com- [ mittee that a cover for £250 for a single accident and a total cover of £1000 should be taken out with the State Fire Office. 1 Councillor J, R. Jameson asked if £1000 wbuld be sufficient total cover. Councillor J. K. Johnston pointed out that it would be possible for claims to be made in excess Of £1000. It was decided that the single cover risk should be increased to £500 and the total cover to £2000. On the recommendation of a special 1 committee an offer of a loan of £750 at s'/_ per cent, for the Unemployment Relief Loan was accepted. The maintenance of roads built for the purpose of subdividing sections of laud was dealt with, and Councillor Jameson moved that the owners of such roads should maintain them in good condition for a period of three months after they had been handed over to the council. He said that in some instances roads had been made which apparently fulfilled the j conditions imposed by the council, but after a few months' wear they had collapsed owing to bad foundations. Councillor Blewman said that once the council took over the roads it should undertake to maintain them. It was pointed out that in other boroughs the usual practice was to make the owners maintain the roads for a definite period. It was finally decided that in all future subdivisions the owners should undertake the maintenance of the roads for three months. _____„____,__.________.
