THE FULL £100,000
WANTED THIS YEAR
MAYOR MAKES AN APPEAL OVER £88,000 TO DATE If Wellington people get the rigbt spirit during the next fortnight and enter into the carnival with two thoughts in iSmd —to help along the Art Gallery and Museum Fund, aud to get all the fun out of the entertainments arranged—saia the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, to-day, the fund can be rounded off before tha year is out. The donations and promises now exceed £88,000. "The effort, to raise £100,000, the city's share of the cost of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, to be erected in conjunction with the National War Memorial and the Carillon Memorial on tho Mount Cook site, has met with a very wonderful response," said Mr. Troup, "and I am sure that every citizen and every subscriber will agree with me when I say that. Over £88,000 had been received and promised to date, and it is hoped to bring this amount up to £90,000 by direct contributions. That was the objective of tho committee when the second stage of the campaign was entered upon, and it is pleasing to know that their anticipations are likely to be realised. "It was decided to raise the last £10,000 by means of a carnival, and for that reason the general campaign committee did hot include in its programme entertainments of any kind, leaving the field clear to the Carnival Committees. Now the third stago is "being entered upon, and it is sincerely hoped that everyone will join in in the right spirit and help .to make it the success for which the promoters have so willingly been' working. I therefore appeal to all citizens of Wellington and to the many who will visit Wellington, taking advantage of the excursion arrangements made by.the Bailway Department, to enjoy themselves, and, by doing so, to carry the carnival on to success and the fund on to the full £100,----000. "So far under 3000 persons or firms have subscribed to the fund, which, leaves a very large .number of citizens who have not yet contributed in any way, many of them doubtless because they did not care to send in small donations. Now is their opportunity. They may subscribe a shilling' or a couple of shillings in entrance fees and at the same time get something substantial in entertainment in return. "I heartily commend the efforts of those who have gone to such pains in producing the three spectacular pageants and other entertainments to every citizen. Wellington has done very well, much better than many people believed was possible; we ask now that Wellington shall not tire of well-doing, but shall carry, the campaign on to £100,000 before* the year is out.'.' MORE CONTESBXJTIONS. A further meeting of committee-men and canvassers was held yesterday afternoon, when the Mayor announced that the £88,000 mark had been reached, and that less than £12,000 is nowrequired for the magnificent grouping of national buildings on Mount Cook. The meeting, after a general discussion upon the carnival prospects, which were considered very bright indeed, was optimistic as to the finalising of tho campaign very shortly. It is anticipated that some further substantial donations will be announced shortly. Yesterday's list brings tho total to £87,094 13s 2d, but in addition there are further donations, making up .the £88,000, but too late in the afternoon to be included, in the list, which is made up and doublecheeked by the City Treasurer. These will be announced later. The new list is as follows:— \ £ s. a. T. anU W.
