LIFEBOAT CAPSIZES

RETURN FROM RESCUE RYE ROBBED OF MENFOLK British Official Wireless. (Received 16th November, 11 a.m.) EUGBY, 15th November. The whole crew of 17 of the lifeboat of Bye lost their lives to-day when the. ] boat capsized in terrific seas in the Channel, as she was returning from answering distress calls from the Latvian, steamer Alice. The whole of the male fishing population of the tiny hamlet of Bye harbour has been practically wiped out by the disaster, which is the worst in lifeboat history for 42 years. Ten bodies so far have been recovered. The tragic aspect of the affair ig that five' minutes after the lifeboat had put to sea, a message was received that the crew of the Alice, had been taken aboard the German steamer Smyrna, and that no assistance was required. Watchers on the cliffs who saw the lifeboat capsize ran to the little village, and doctors, nurses, and first-aid men raced to a gap in the cliffs leading to the shore. A human chain was formed, and, up to their necks in the boiling surf, volunteers fought to rescue the floating dead bodies from a watery grave. Later the lifeboat itself was hurled ashore by the waves, with two of the dead crew beneath it, '
