OTAKI SEAT

MR. PURCHASE AT TAWA FLAT .Mr. James Purchase, Independent Labour candidate for Otaki, addressed a well-attended meeting of electors in the Tawa IMat School last night. The audience listened with interest to his reasons for contesting the seat against Mr. Field and the Reform Party and for doing all in his power to defeat the present Government. The candidate criticised the Reform Party for its inability to deal with unemployed and move with the times; also for the indiscriminate way in which people had been brought out from the Old Country without giving them a true knowledge of the conditions prevailing in New Zealand. He spoke of the class distinctions the Government was creating by its moth-' ods of dealing with the Public Service and the superannuation schemes; and gave instances to illustrate the Government's unfair treatment of the Public servants and others. Mr. Purchase touched on the failure of the Meat Control Board, because of the Government not taking the proper interest in it, and the serious consequences to the country. After a hoarty vote of thanks had been passed for. his very able address, tho candidate said he trusted the electors to show their confidence in him at the ballot-box and hoped to be in a position to work for them in a wider sphere after gaining a seat at the coming election. Mr. W. Sievers1 presided and was accorded a vote of thanks.
