FEDERAL ELECTIONS
GOVERNMENT LOSES SEAT MEMBER'S OVERSIGHT United Press issoclttlon—Bj Electtlr Ii grapb- Copyright. SYDNEY, 19th October. Nominations closed to-day for the Commonwealth elections on 17th November. Practically all the sitting members were nominated, but a sensation was caused when it was disclosed that Mr. Eobert Cook, retiring member for the Indi electorate (Victoria), a Government supporter, had omitted to nominate. It was a pure oversight, with the result that the Labour candidate, Mr. Paul Jones, is automatically elected, and a safe Government seat has been lost. Mr. Jones. has had no previous experience in Parliament. Three Government supporters in New South Wales have been returned unopposed, and two Labour members in Victoria were unopposed. There are contests in all the other States, excepting in one or two electorates, and also contests for Senate seats in every State. Political parties represented are Nationalists, Country Party nominees, who stand behind the Bruce Government, official Labour candidates, and about eight Independents.
