It is estimated on a conservative basis that a crop of not less than 200 tons o£ fruit will be harvested in January 'i and Fcbroary, 1929. ■ , One of the experts of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company will arrive at Suva on November 2 in order to can the first season's crop of the present company. The company's Waidau plantation contains 1,039 acres of freehold and 333 acres: of leasehold, anill.-has'been the subject of several years' development work. The Company also owns a complete canning plant with a capacity of 6,000 tins per day. The New Zealand Market. The first and immediate market for the Company's output is New Zealand, whose annual importation of canned pineapple is equal to 75,000 cases of 24- 2lb. tins. The import duty on the Hawaiian article is 45 per cent., while it is only 25 per cent, on the Fijian. By January, 1931, the Company's production, together •with that from fruit produced by native or other growers (and not taken into account in estimating its profit) should approximate to the whole of New Zealand requirements. • The market in Canada and England has been proved, and within a short period New Zealand should be the Company's smallest customer. . The annual Canadian import of canned'pineapples is. equal to 285,000 cases of 24 2lb. tins, and is valued at approximately £400,000. It is divided almost equally between British and American produce. . • ■ • ''.- ■ ' '. There is .a'British preferential tariff '^of -|cent per lb., as against the tariff on American imports of 2£ cents per lb.
