RED CROSS CANTEEN

AT PUBLIC HOSPITAL BOON" TO OUTPATIENTS Not the least useful, but probably the least known, of Bed-Cross enterprises in this city is the canteen run bl/ the ladies' auxiliary of the society at Wellington Public Hospital. Fitted up by the Hospital authorities, and stocked by the auxiliary, the canteen is placed near to the outpatients' waiting room, for it is to supply -refreshments'to the outpatients'that the canteen has been started. Visitors to the wards also may obtain a hot drink on their way in or out, and occasionally visits are paid by convalescent patients. The Bed Cross does not make any profit from the sale of these refreshment's; in fact, it does not always cover expenses, although all help is given voluntarily by ladies of the auxiliary. Buns, cakes, sausage '■'; rolls, white or brown bread and butter aiid biscuits are served with the tea, coffee, cocoa, or milk at a very small charge,' and it is felt that if more of the outpatients knew of the arrangement they, would patronise the canteen still further, for many have a long time to wait, and on cold days especially, morning or afternoon tea is pleasant and welcome. It is served from the canteen on trays, so that patients are not away from their places when the doctor is ready for them. .■■ '.•'■■■' • '.. ■' :: Some very generous gifts were made by outsiders when the canteen was started two "months "ago.: ; : ' The helpers look very neat and trim in their white starched overalls aiid ucat head bands with the Bed- Cross emblem worked in front,-and a businesslike 'account -book is kept each;1 day, showing the receipts and signed by those on duty at the time. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays the canteen is open all' day, ■ But' on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the mornings only. Miss Eager is" the canteen secretary, and Mrs. C..-8. .Wright, who initiated and organised the opening of the depot for the auxiliary," is the society's representative to the Hospital Board. ,"'■'■
