MEMBERS' SALARIES

(To the Editor.) ' Sir,—"A.B." in your issue of the 13th instant 'is apparently a very young and inexperienced contributor. Of course, his youth is not his fault, but he should know something of his subject before he presumes to advise the public. Is good service worth' paying for'/ He will hardly ! deny that it is, even with his admitted : smaller means of knowledge o£ Parlameui,' and probably other phases of public liie. ,' . "A beiievoient despotism may have many good points, but wnu, "A.8." included, desaes to be governed by mo-ue>ed men? iht'ieuidy jt many moneyed men who are nut aLciiuteu with "get inure at any price," but now are we to liuow them? It must be admitted that this '"affliction" is dominant vvitu these people. We have been duminaieu 100 iou;j by wealth; is it not lane we averted ourseives and commenced to govern the wealth of this "God's Own Country"? Aiy ambition, like many others, is to be leyiesented in Parliament by someone who simply must do his utj most to piease the majority of his conj stiiuents, i.e., a servant, not a master! In ; all partj 01 tins earth wealth has governed up till now, and where is the Utopia? it is only where wealth has had a virile opposition that such country is fit to live in. What would this fair Dominion be like had it not been for the efforts of such men as Ballance, Seddon,l and Holland v We have much to be thankful for, but we must not forget the cause. My advice to "A.8." and others (if there are any) with the same kink in their mind, is to put a man in to represent them who "hasn't a bean"; he is the fellow that will look after his job, i.e., legislate for the- majority.. 14th November will give us our chance, no matter what his creed, if he. possesses that, qualification of being dependent on his salary, a servant and not a master.—l am, etc., J. MILLEI* ■
