GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS PRICES GOING DOW 1 During the year ended 30th June, 1928, the Architectural Branch of the Works Department prepared plans for 78 new works, of a total esti--mated value of £751,060, of which 33 contracts, to the amount of £96,699^ have been let. In addition, 33 conw tracts, to the amount of £172,570, for buildings designed prior to 30th June^ 1927, have also been let, making the total of works completed or under construction £269,209. ' • '. The latter .total includes £48,719 for secondary seliooi uuildings, and £51,602 1 for hospitals, etc., designed for hospital boards. ■ ,• New Zealand materials and nianufac. turos have been used, except where the use of imported material was unavoidable, with generally satisfactory results. The Government Architect (Mr. ,T. T. Mair) says that competition fbiGovernment contracts has been keen, wrth prices generally showing a downward tendency, ■ and tho standard of workmanship has been satisfactory.
