PAPANUI'S BIG RACE

WELLINGTON UNSUCCESSFUL Wellington had six representatives in '. the 100-mile cycle road race, staged by the Papanui Amateur Sports Club, in Canterbury, on Saturday. The visitors, however, were unfortunate in the matter, of mishaps, M. Gane being the. only one to come through without, and then hay- , ing to be cpntent with 19th place. The winner of the race was B. W. Arnst,. C. Be,arman second. Both' these riders, were' on the 50-minute mark, and rode surprisingly .well. The scratch .men, L. G. Liikey (winner of the Palmerston North to Wellington race) and F. G, Grose, covered the journey in fastest time, though ; twenty-two competitors finished ahead of them. In the'final sprint for time Grose beat Lukey by a narrow margin. Farmer; who performed -well in the Palmerston North-Wellington race, secured third fastest time, with M.Ganc (Wellington) next on the 'list of time honours. S. K.'Webber (Wellington) completed the course in good time in spite of punctures, which also- ■ affected S. Wright (Wellington), who was one.of.the first in the race to strike this type of bad luck. A. Crichton damaged a wheel, and D. loomer and A. Morris, the other Wellington riders,'had nasty Hpilis. • . Ihe following were the platings, with the actual riding times in parentheses:— B> W.
