AUSTRALIAN COTTON INDUSTRY.
Austral Silk and Cotton Mills, Mdbournv^, after providing for depreciation, sustained net loss of £4308 for the period from the inception of the company to 30th June, 1928. The mills started manufacture of cotton yarn in. October last. It was fovflad that the Australian market was heavily overstocked with importations of cheap foreign yarns that had been rushed into ihe country in the expectation of a duty jbcing imposed, which duty had already o'een notified to take effect on a certain elite. This made progress very difficult, A.nd the same state of affairs still contfti ues, as the tariff proposals have been agaiij further postponed. The company is nijw installing machinery for the manufacture of both cotton tweeds and percentage .yarns.
