A WIN AND A DRAW WELLINGTON DOES WELL CANTERBURY BEATEN Hockey enthusiasts found much to interest them at the Ilutt Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon, when the Wellington-Canterbury and the Wellington B-Waliganui representative games wero played. The grounds were in excellent order considering the heavy rain on the previous night, and both games were well-contested. In the principal match, Wellington proved too good for Canterbury, beating the southerners by 7 goals to 3. Canterbury lacked the strength of previous seasons, but were nevertheless capable of good hockey, and the local players had anything but an easy win. The teams in the other game were well-matched, a draw, 3-all, resulting. GAME WITH CANTERBURY. The teams were:—Canterbury: H Snook; J. Hitehens, C. James; R. Meynell, J. Anderson, B. Grafton; J. Ainger, L. Coffey, W. Kushbridge, H. Teague, J. Squire. Wellington: C. Moore; B. Massey, P. Spiers; P. Joblin, E. M'Leod, C. Smallwood; H. Paul, M'Gavin, Robb, E. Lusty, Rouse. j Wellington won' the initial bully, and the forwards pressed home an attack, but Hitehens cleared- with a long shot, and Squire raced down the left wing, but shot across the net. For several minutes the visitors held the upper hand, Massey relieving when a score seemed imminent. Play was transferred to the Canterbury area- and a corner followed. Lusty failed to connect with the hit, and. Moynell cleared, but Smalhvood intercepted and passed to Eobb. The ball rebounded from Snook's pads to' Lusty, who followed in to score. Wellington 1, Canterbury 0. From the bully Wellington looked dangerous, James saving his side from a score with a long clearance. Grafton and Eushbridge took the ball to the Wellington circle, but Spiers was safe and | found the line. The roll-in went to Wellington, and a spirited attack followed, Lusty capping the movement with a good goal. Wellington 2, Canterbury 0. Canterbury took the aggressive with the bully, the attack being only stopped by Moore. The ball went out to the Wellington halves, but J. Squire intercepted and put in a great run down the wing until robbed by Joblin when in a handy position. Joblin transferred to Paul, and the local forwards got away, Paul centring to Eobb, who failed to connect in the circle. Lusty, however, secured and shot successfully. Wellington 3, Canterbury 0. Canterbury again pressed, "sticks" by Joblin when clearing giving the visitors a. chance. Cofl'ey just missed the net from the corner. Another corner to Canterbury a moment later was fully; availed of, Squire scoring a beautiful goal. Wellington 3, Canterbury 1. Again the visitors attacked, Teague's shot at. goal after nice passing striking the post. Then M'Leod sent the forwards away, a clever piece of passing work allowing Robb to beat Snook easily. Wellington 4, Canterbury 1. Halftime followed. The second spell opened with an attack by Wellington, a goal nearly coming from a shot by Lusty. The ball was cleared, and travelled out to Squire, who made another great run down the wing, but lout control on the edge of the circle. ;The same player was prominent a moment later, beating Spiers but being robbed by Moore in the goal-mouth. Wellington had slightly the better of the next few minutes, the visitors holding them until M'Gavin received the ball from Lusty and shot high into the net. Wellington 5, Canterbury 1. Strenuous play by Canterbury fully tested the Wellington defence in the ensuing stages, a well-deserved goal finally coming from the stick of Ainger to beat Moore completely. Wellington 5, Canterbury 2. Smailwood did good work in the next Wellington attack, and Paul, Eobb, M'Gavin, and Rouse were associated in several shots at goal, Snook saving brilliantly. A melee followed in the Canterbury circle, Paul at last flicking the ball into the net high up. Wellington 0, Canterbury 2. Canterbury had the better of play from the bully, and gradually worked downfield. A roll-in sent the ball to Squire, who made no mistake with his shot. Wellington 6, Canterbury 3. In the final stages Canterbury pressed hard, and were several times within scoring distance, but Massey and Spiers cleared each time. Teague and Squire were both unlucky not to score for the visitors. With a minute to go, Lusty secured near the half-line, and made a typical rim which tricked the opposition. Snook came out, but missed the kick, and the ball rolled in. Wellington 7, Canterbury 3. There was no further score. Messrs. W. A. Scott and W. Keys were the referees. A DRAWN GAME.
