SHIPPING MATCH
The match between the Combined Shipping Companies and the Union Steam Ship Company was played at Seatoun on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the Union 'Company by 3 points to 0. Favoured by a strong northerly wind in the first half the Combined team was able to hold its own, but when the Union Company's team had this advantage in the second spell it had the better of the game' territorially. The heavier Union Company forwards were superior in the scrums, but the Combined Companies' backs showed better combination. The Combined team opened the play with a forward rush, but were driven into their own twenty-five by the heavier Union Euck. A good line kick by Whinam rought Combined to the attack and Union forced. Two free kicks were awarded to Combined outside Union's twentyfive, but Whinam failed on each occasion. Combined secured from a serum near Union's line, and yon der Sloot sent the ball out to the blind side. Union's defence held, and Clark broke through to halfway. Thompson broke away into Union s territory. He took a short punt over Lapworth's head, but the wind carried the ball too far. When the half-time whistle, blew neither team had scorccL Soon after play was resumed tw_o free kicks were awarded to Union, but both failed. The Union backs broke away after a determined forward rush, but lost possession, and enabled Combined to force.
The relieving kick brought Combined into Union's twenty-five. Whinam got the ball in the ruck and passed to Jowett, who cut in ur.d nearly crossed Union's lino. The Union forwards held the defence and gradually forced Combined back into their own twenty-five. A few minutes betore the final whistle Spring picked up in the ruck near Combined s goal line and scored. Connor missed the kick, making the final score: Uuiou Company 3, Combined Shipping Companies 0. 3lr. J. A. Wilson rcfereed.
