MAIL BY SOUTHERN CROSS
LETTER TO R.S.A. Amongst the letters carried by the Southern Cross during her flight across the Tasman Sea was one from the Eeturned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia, addressed to the general secretary of. the K.S.A. (Mr. S. A. Harrison), the envelope being endorsed "By the kind courtesy of Squad-ron-Leader Captain C. Kingsford Smith and Lieutenant C. T. P. "Ulm, per the monoplane the Southern Cross." Tlio letter, was as follows:— Bear Mr. Harrison, — By the kind courtesy of our comrades, Squadron-Leader Captain C. Kingsford Smith and Lieutenant 0. T. P. Ulm, and through their wonderful achievement in making the first flight from Australia to New Zealand, in that now world-renowned monoplane the Southern Cross, I wish, on behalf of the returned soldiers, sailors, and nurses in-New South Wales, Australia, to extend to our old comrades in New Zealand fraternal greetings, good wishes, and the hope that the future years shall bring to them happiness and prosperity. Our two comrades by their amazing and historical flight from America to Australia : has shown to the , world the true Anzac Digger spirit, and which has again manifested it- , self by their flight to New Zealand. Yours fraternally, W. J. STAGG, State Secretary. It is found that effect cannot be given to a suggestion made that a great gathering of school children should take place on Monday afternoon at the Basin Keserve to meet the aviators. The Basin Reserve is not available at present, as it. is being top-dressed. Apart from this, however, it would be difficult in the time available, being the week-end, to organise so large a gathering. . '
