THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT
Members of the House of Bepreseutatives settled down to business in earneat yesterday and in the space of a little over five hours fourteen classes of the Estimates were agreed to. There was a minimum of discussion and the only vote which aroused and real interest was that of the Education Department. During the debate on this vote members of the Opposition endeavoured to secure an expression of opinion from the House that teachers should be given the right of appeal against nonappointment, but an amendment moved in this direction by the member for Wellington Central (Mr. P. Fraser) was defeated by 29 votes to 12. The votes agreed to were those of the Department of Industries and Commerce, the Treasury, Land and Income Tax, Stamp Duties, Customs, Education, Labour, National Provident, External Affairs, Native Land Settlement, Native Trust, Public Trust, Discharged Soldier Settlement, and Lands for Settlement Account. Before the House adjourned at 10.15 p.m., it" disagreed with an amendment made by the Legislative Council in the Statutory Land Charges Registration Bill and appointed managers to confer with managers representing "another place."
