SMALL SHOPKEEPERS
Mr. G. S. Thomson, F.R.A., general secretary for the New Zealand Shopkeepers' Association, has been on a business and political visit to Wellington, and when interviewed by a representative o£ "The Post" this morning regarding the activities of the Small Shopkeepers' Association, stated that he hoped within the nest month or so to address meetings on the subject in the various centres. Last year the Hon. 6. J. Anderson (the then Minister of Labour), in response to a petition signed by over 2000 shopkeepers, got Parliament to pass un amendment to the Shops and. Offices Act taking the granting of exemptions away from the Arbitration Court and placing it under the control of the Magistrate's Court. The result has been 'that a fairly large number of the very smallest shopkeepers have received exemption from the closing hours' clause. His idea in holding meetings shortly will be to let the shopkeepers know exactly where they stand and to push further the interests of small shopkeepers who employ no labour and have practically no say whatever in the matter.
