THE NEWSROOM
PAPERS NOT GOING "A wrong impression has evidently been gathered as to the view taken by the Libraries Committee of the suggestion that the newspaper- room at the Centra] Library should be closed; two correspondents to your paper have evidently got on the wrong track," said Councillor J. Burns, chairman of the Libraries Committee, to a "Post" reporter to-day. The committee had not decided that the newspapers should go, nor had members of the council as a whole expressed themselves in favour of that move. On the contrary, those f.-ho had spoken on the proposal had expressed the opinion that the news room was a very popular and also a very valuable branch of library work in Wellington, and that, notwithstanding practice elsewhere, should not be discontinued. That was definitely his own view. The articles which appeared in "The Post" a few days ago made this position clear, but owing to the dropping of a query mark after the first heading "Papers To Go?" the line appeared "Papers To Go," quite a different thing. That form of heading, in question form, was used because the council has not yet reached a formal decision upon the point, but there is apparently no doubt that the decision, when the matter is fully discussed, will be that tho news room is to stay.
