DAMAGED CARGO
THE PORT NAPIER WORK AT STANDSTILL (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post") AUCKLAND, This Day. As a result of the waterside workers' demands for increased pay no work was done this morning iv discharging the Port Napier's cargo. The first demand was pay at 7s (3d an hour for handling cargo partly damaged by fire. A suggested compromise that an extra lOd per hour for work on the shelter deck and lOd an hour for work in the 'tween decks was not accepted. Yesterday afternoon, after one stop, work proceeded in the hold where tho fire occurred while a conference was proceeding, but an impasse was reached. Part of the cargo from No. 4 hold had been unloaded. Some of it was hopelessly damaged by fire and water. Much of the cargo was intended for the Auckland Christmas trade. Outwardly tho case cargo in sight appears damaged, mostly by smoke. It is known, however, that a great deal of damage was caused by the large amount of water pumped into the hull.
