ROAD ALTERATIONS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—lt is generally admitted that it is much pleasanter that level crossings should be made safe for motorists,- but at times little thought seems to be given to the taxpayer by those who demand luxuries! t w ? Sp t t alked of crossinß at- Present is that at Petone, near the Grand National Hotel, and to fix a ramp there will be a costly job which should not be rushed until the expense is ascertained exactly— not approximately-for if the road b« diverted it is clear that there will be heavy compensation for loss of frontages, lie hotel is right against the crossing to be closed, which means removal of the iiotel to another frontage or payment for oss of business. If the road frontage is ett, by the crossing being placed on the land now occupied by the railway shopssoon to be moved—these expensive compensations would not occur. As a taxpayer I protest against expensive road alterations to give facilities) for quick travel, mostly to pleasure-seekers. The crossing is safe enough, but it is the occasional delay there that motorists abhor; but, why should they only be considered? —I am, etc., . ' OVERTAXED.
