AT WANGANUI

GUINEAS TO CONSENT CATKIN" WINS MARANGAI HANDICAP (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") WANGANUI, 13th September. After a lot of heavy rain the Wanganui Jockey Club was lucky enough to open its Spring Meeting yesterday in dry but. cold weather. As only wqs to be expected under such circumstances the track was on the holding side, but once more demonstrated that it is the best wet weather course .in the Dominion. Despite the fact that the attendance fell, short of that of many former years the totalisator turnover of £22,770 represented an increase of £3552 over the corresponding day of last year. The only official inquiry during the day was that concerning Valkon's running in the Marangai Handicap, but after hearing lengthy evidence it was decided to adjourn the case till to-morrow. After going about half a furlong in the Marangai Handicap, Nukumai appeared to receive a bump and almost fell, and the impact caused J. Proctor to lose his balance", and fall. He appeared to get mixed up in Nukumai's legs but was conscious when carried to the casualty ward. At barrier rise in the Maiden Plate, J. Potter was knocked off Salt Petrel, but was unhurt. The defeat of Episode in the Guineas was very unpalatable to backers. _ She was a short odds-on favourite, but it was the want of a race that beat her. During an interval between racing' a parade for two-year-olds took place, the youngsters being dispatched in two lots of about a dozen each. In the first heat the Wellington-owned Francolin, a daughter of Paper Money and Philomela, went out of the barrier like an old one to lead home Valpre, a Chief Ruler filly from O. Cox's stable, with Imperial Guard and Coon Song close up. The second division went to. First Money, with Praeda and Tea Queen near him. ,; .MAIDEN RACE. The first event, the MaideriVJßace, was a fine betting race, The Warden finishing up a thirty-ticket better favourite than Marica, while Teremoana was within a few pounds of that pair, and Cashier, Maurieana, arid Foreign Fancy each had a big following. From a fair send-off, Marica was quickest into her stride, to lead Maurieana,' The Warden, Cashier, and Foreign Fancy over the first few furlongs. As the field'raced into the straight Maurieana was well clear of Marica, Cashier, The Warden, and Teremoana. In the run up the straight a.spirited contest eventuated, Cashier finishing well to beat The Warden by a neck, with tho fast-finishing Teremoana half a length further off, just a head in front of Maurieana. Then followed Otaura Lass, Skypoint, and Foreign Fancy. The winner is a shapely but small son of Paper Money, and his performance was attractive. The Warden ran a solid race but was not good enough, but Teremoana was unlucky in the early stages, and with a good start would possibly have won. OKEHU HURDLES. Cohesion was favourite for the Okehu Hurdles. Gaze, also, had an army of supporters, and Kilburn, too, carried big figures. Glengariff led Beaumont and Olympic over the initial jump, but the last-named then took charge, and at the stands was eight lengths clear of Beaumont, who was followed by Glengariff and Cohesion. There was little alteration till two furlong, from the winning-post. Here Glengariff went to the front, and Cohesion, jumping badly, fell back. Gaze moved up at the last jump. Glengariff still led, but once over Gaze headed him off to win easily, and Vexatious, coming with a fast late run, beat Glengariff in the last stride for second place. Beaumont was an indifferent fourth. Gaze was too well seasoned for his opponents, and, although very lame before the start, was not much affected thereby, as he was always within easy distance of his field, although last over- the early stages. Glengariff gave a good exhibition, and looked certain to pay a dividend when racing to the last jump, but ho tired badly. Vexatious tailed off over the first mile, but finished best of all. Cohesion jumped badly at time., and lost many leDgths. PUTIKI HACK HANDICAP. Singleton was the elect of bettors for the Putiki Hack, but there was a lot of money for Moorgas, and the bracketed pair Pale Star and Vigilance were also solidly supported. Vigilance anticipated the barrier rise, and she was several lengths clear of Flying Shot, Moorgas, Discourse, and Pale Star passing the stands. Galloping very freely, Vigilance continued to load, and there was little change in the other positions, except that Singleton moved nearer the leader. At the straight entrance Vigilance was still clear of Flying Shot, Moorgas, and Singleton, and finishing on well beat Flying Shot by over a length, while Moorgas was three lengths off in third place, and Singleton a similar distance back fourth. Possibly the good start secured by Vigilance was helpful, but she won nicely. Flying Shot ran an honest race, and Moorgas ran on better than many expected. Singleton appeared to be the unlucky runner. SEAFIELD HANDICAP. _*angol:n was a good favourite for the Seafield Handicap, but Partaga and the King Lu-Waltzer bracket came in for a lot of attention from the betting public. •When the tapes rose Pangolin was first to break the line, and he led from King Lv, Partaga, and Kilperon. Racing up the back stretch Pangolin was just clear cf Kilperon, the pair being followed by Partaga, Royal Game, and Te Koroke. As the horse* swept into the straight Royal Game and Pangolin were leading Partaga, Te Koroka, and Kilperon. Over the last furlong a desperate race took place, first Pangolin, then Te Koroke, and finally Partaga appearing as likely to win, but, artMtically handled by B. Morris, Partaga got up in the last stride to beat Te Koroke by a head, with Pangolin half a neck away, and KilperoD and Royal Game very cloaa to the placed hor.es. Keddar, finishing well, was fifth. Partaga showed courago to win, and in ri senna vsi lucky, as Te Koroke appeared to jjoro in on him, thus hampering both ha and Pangolin. Royal Game ran a good race, but Keddar was not ridden with *he beet of judgment. THE GUINEAS. $jtr <he Wftngaxmi Guineas, Episode was fu&Sfrf-d iviih jwst over three limes the '

support accorded Consent", who carried only a few more tickets tlitui did Moutoa Treasury and Full Feather. The barrier rose to an excellent start, Episode being the quickest to begin, but racing into the buck straight she -was joined by Lucky Light, who later led for a brief turn from Episode and Full Feather and Consent. Approaching the straight Episode was just in front of Lucky Light, with Consent galloping freely at their heels. Once in a line for the judge, Ejfsode drew away, but Consent immediately challenged, and, hard ridden, caught and iiassed Episode a hundred yards from the post; but ho had to do his best to beat her by half a neck. High Falutin' was about five lengths away third, and Lucky Light was next. There is little doubt that the winter racing at Otaki and Trentham won the race for Consent, as he was much more seasoned than Episode. The later lacked a race, but she finished with great courage. High Falutin' went a fair race. DURIE HACK HANDICAP. Of the fifteen runners for the Durio Hack Handicap, Knightlike claimed most followers, but To Atiawa carried within £150 of his total. No other competitor carried half this amount. Te Atiawa began very smartly from barrier rise, being followed over the early stages by Avoncourt, Sovena, Banket, Rash, and Desert Knight, while Knightlike was a long way back. Bounding the home turn Te Atiawa had a substantial lead from Banket, Desert Lad, Bash, and Knightlike. Finishing on gamely Te Atiawa won by half a length from Desert Lad, who just beat Banket by a head in the last few strides, while Sovena and Knightlike were almost on terms. Te Atiawa showed a Jot of speed and ran with courage, and is .' promising. Both Banket and Desert Lad ran up to their best form, but the ■ unlucky runner was Knightlike, who gave the leaders a big start over the last half-mile to finish a close fifth. MARANGAI HANDICAP. Valkon, Queen Arch, and Blimp were evenly supported for the Marangai Handicap, while Horomea, Black Mint, and Talisker claimed fair support. The tapes rose to a good start, Blimp showing most speed to lead past the stand from Valkon, Vivo, and Captain Gazeley. Up the back straight Vivo went to the front, followed by Blimp, Taliskeiy Captain Gazeley, and Valkon. Approaching the straight Vivo was attended by Blimp, Catkin, and Talisker.; but over the final stages Catkin put in good work to win nicely from Blimp, who just held off the. fast-finishing pair,-Valkon and Queen Arch. While there was nothing in the nature of a fluke about Catkin's win, there is a possibility that Valkon would have beaten him had Valkon's rider moved earlier. Blimp ran a good race throughout, and, as -usual, Queen Arch finished well. FLYING HANDICAP. Betting took a wide range intne Flying Handicap, Staghunter finishing up a hundred pound better favourite than Lady's Boy, with Tea Time and Kiosk carrying almost as much as Lady's Boy. The start was not good, Benzora and Limited being very badly left. The brilliant Helotis led up the back from Tea Time, Lady's Boy, Starboard Light, and Stagj hunter. With two furlongs to go Helotis | was well clear of Lady's Boy, Oration, and Tea Time. In a good finish Helotis cume on well to beat Oration by half a length. Tea Time was a close third, and Keremoana and Laughing Prince together next. Helotis showed all her old speed over the initial stages, and ran on better against this good class than was generally expected. Oration was not well placed early, but finished on quite gamely. Tea Time showed speed, but tired a little. The best performances were put up by Keremoana and Laughing Prince, both of whom drew outside positions and were literally flying at the finish just behind the first three.
