RADIO SOCIETY
BROADCASTING RACES The general meeting of the Wellington Amateur Society was fairly well attended on Tuesday, the chair being taken by Mr. Byron Brown. Tho reply of the Kacing Conference, in reference to the broadcasting of racing news, in reply to resolutions passed by the Hawkes Bay and Wellington societies, was fully discussed. The secretary of the conference pointed out that it would be more convenient for settlers in the country districts to hear the results of the racing in the evenings after their day's work was done, and as far as sick people were concered, it was no hardship for them, as they had visitors in the afternoons. He further quoted the Commissioner of Police as saying that he is against the broadcasting from the racecourse, as it tends to increase illegal betting. It was decided to hold over the question of what further action may be taken in this connection. Sir. Johnston, of the New Zealand Amateur Transmitters' Association, attended and offered the services of the members in overcoming interference from howling valves and power line leakages. It was suggested that the association should cooperate with the Post and Telegraph Department and the dealers in-their scheme to overcome these difficulties. Mr. T. H. M'Williams, radio operator of the Southern Cross, is to be invited to give an address to the society when next in Wellington. The suggestion was received with applause. Mr. G. R. M'Carthy then delivered, an address on the evolution of the short-wave circuit. He pointed* out many of the pitfalls of amateurs in constructing shortwave sets, and the desirability of always putting the best of materials into the work if good results are to be obtained. This lecture was both interesting and instructive. After questions had been answered, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. M'Carthy for his address.
