GRANT OF £2000
GOVERNMENT'S DECISION ANNOUNCED BY MR. COATES Iv the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. J. G. Coates) announced that the Government had decided to make a grant of £2000 us a recognition of the flight of Captain Kingsford Smith and his companions. Replying to a question addressed to him by Mr. G. E. Sykes (Masterton), Mr. Coates said he wanted to refer in tho first place to the effort which had been made by Moncrieffi and Hood. That flight had had an unfortunate and disastrous result. Tho Government some time ago had decided to mako a contribution-in order that, with the contributions which had been made by the people of New Zealand, the widows of the ill-fated airmen would receive tho equivalent of a war widow's pension. That had now been arranged. In. regard to the flight of Captain Kingsford Smith and party, it had been successful as a result of wonderful organisation, and he thought tho people of New Zealand would like to recognise I the great flight in some tangible manner. The flight had shown the wonderful possibilities of tho air, and such efforts wero worthy of encouragement,
