RACEHORSES FOR NEW ZEALAND
Whirlwind, the four-year-old thoroughbred chestnut colt which Mr. H. R. Mackenzie has bought for the Auckland Stud Company, has been shipped by the Westmoreland (says "The Post's" Auckland correspondent). Whirlwind is by Galloper Light—Double Back (dam of Pillion) by Bachelor's Double out of Music Wood, by Glenwood or Isobar, out of Hear Hear by Marden. He belongs to the No. 1 family and comes, on the dam's side, from the same family as Martian. The purchase was made from Mr. A. de Rothschild. The horse ran unplaced in the Park Plate, the April Stakes, and the Marcus Beresford Plate. In the Meldrum Welter Handicap at Newmarket on 10th May last he came third, and he won the Piccadilly High Weight Handicap (£392) at Hurst Park on 29th May. From Mr. J. B. Reid's stud, Mr. Mackenzie—with whom is Mr. H. M. Marler (Auckland)— bought the chestnut mare Legality (1925) by Noblesse Oblige (by The Tetrarch) out of Honova by Gallinule) out of Permissible by Myram (by Flying Fox) out of Per-
ishable by Isinglass; covered by Tonton; last service, Ist May. Mr. Mackenzie has already been offered for this mare considerably more than the 210 guineas which he paid. The other mare was bought from Mr. C. Stuart Brown. This is Grey Eagle (1924) by Grey Fox 11. out of Anthea, by Thrush out of Rhodanthe, by Arum 11. She has never run. Both mares are being left at Mr. Reid's farm for the present. Mr. Mackenzie intended buying a couple more mares, but he finds there is a tremendous demand for British bloodstock, especially for mares in foal, and the prices are very high. Every country in the world comes to Great Britain to replenish its bloodstock. He and Mr. Marler are greatly impressed by the magnificent racehorses, brood mares, and yearlings they have seen. They have been privileged to visit a number of studs, including those of Lord Astor, at Cliveden, Lord Dewar, and the Lyttelton Stud. They have visited F. Darling's place at Beckhampton, this well-known trainer having under his care some of tho horses owned by Lord Woolayington and Lord Dewar, and they are going to Lctchington, also by invitation. Mr. Mackenzie and Mr. Marler were to travel through England to Scotland and then see tho Continent, and during their travels in France, Belgium, and Germany they hope to avail themselves of the many invitations they have had to inspect some of the best-known Continental studs. On the way from New Zealand they visited at Chicago the magnificent stud owned by Mr. John Hertz, who has there some fine English mares.
