Sir Harry Lauder appears in a new role in "Uuntlußtower," screening this week at tho Regent Theatre. The famous comedian Is scon on tho screen as an actor for the first time, and his work as Angus M'Callum. tho Glasgow grocer, seeking a quiet holiday, is of great merit. "Huntingtower" tells of the escape of a Russian princoso when her homo Is ravaged and her parents murdered by the Bolsheviks. Sho Is saved from tho Bolsheviks by Lieut. Herltago, nephew of M'Callum, who advises her to await him at -Huntingdon Tower Arriving there she finds the towor occupied by tho enemy, and tho dual defeat of the Reds, in which M'Callum and his Glasgow ragamuffins Play no small part, makes an exciting* climax. The princess Is realistically portrayed by Miss Vcra Veronina tlie famous Russian bcauiy. Also on the programme is Arthur Aldrl(Ro, a powerful tenor, whose songs are backed by an unusual stage sotting. Tho orchestra under Ivan Fosello'plays excellent music. Including as an overturo "Stradella," by Flotow. WINGS. Ouo of the outstanding features in tho presentation of "Wings" is tho perfect sound synchronisation of tho picture. Briefly, that innovation in motion picture presentation Is the reproducing for tlio audience the exact sound effects 'of the action In the picture. Thus, ( when one sees tho spedeing of an airplane squadron across tlio screen after an enemy with machine guns ripping away at one another, the exact droning of tho 'planes as well as the rat-tat-tat of the machine guns and tho whine of the wind through tho 'plane struts are distinctly I heard just as though the audience themselves were Immediately below tho scone. The charge of the cavalry of tho skies—the aerial bombing of trenches —mid-air crashes and tlio steady drone of hundreds of 'planes all reverberate I thrililngly through tho theatre with realistic effect. This synchronisation of tho picture is made possible by perfection of special sound effects which operate electrically. For each 'plane there is a different droning effect in perfect tempo to the action of the picture. When a 'plane is soen to crash and fall, the sound of the crash, as well as the whining of tho wires and struts through the air Is reproduced with realism. Especially thrilling is tho rat-rat-rat of the machine gun duel as the weapons spit forth their rapid fire through tho spaces of tho whirling propellers. "Wings" comes to tho Regent Theatre on Friday next, and tho plans at tho theatro and Bristol aro already rapidly filling.
