CIYIC ASSOCIATION
Mr. Strong, of the central braiick of the Lower Hutt Civic Association, president, was in the chair at the monthly meeting held recently. The preliminary stage for selection of candidates for the biennial Borough Council election was discussed, and it was decided to canvass the district with the objective of selecting a more representative council. Complaints were made that unnecessary delay was experienced at. the council offices when ratepayers attended to transact business. It was urged that an expeditious business system was needed. The disappearance of the VictoriaCuba streets junction gift firebell since the installation of the modern lire alarm system was remarked upon by an early resident. It was decided to ask the council to recover the firebell, and dedicate it, with the inscribed names of original firemen attached, to the new fire brigado building as a souvenir of the work of the volunteer brigade in past years. Attention was drawn to the neglected condition of the Hutt River main traffic bridge. As the bridge provides a river crossing for the north-west traffic and will continue in service for many years, tho council i3 to be requested to overhaul and paint it. The badly-damagod condition of Wakefield street, which was causing apprehension -to motor drivers, is to be brought under the council's notice. The Petono .Borough Council is to be communicated with regarding tho permanent lighting of tho Hutt road railway ramp. It was stated that tho present electric light provisions seldom functioned, and the place was dangerous. The Hutt Kiver Board Empowering Bill was also considered. A communication from the Taita Ratepayers' Association explained that a clause in the Bill enabling tho Biver Board to dispose of its reserves did not affect the reserve the Supreme Court injunction controlled. This being deemed satisfactory, no representations will be madeto Parliament. By request a letter was written to the Wellington Trotting Club stewards asking that tho reduction- of the £200 stakes to £125 and tho increase of the £300 stakes to £400 be reviewed, as the change adversely affected the trotting community of the district.
