The depression which' was passing South-east east Australia on Monday morning advanced across tho Tasman Sea during the night, and on Tuesday morning was enveloping tho South Island. As a result, there has been a considerable fall in barometers in tho South. Tho south-westerly winds have veered to northerlies nearly everywhere, and this morning were fresh to strong at places in and south of Cook Strait. The weather was mainly fair during Monday but a rapid . Increase ■ in cloudiness took place ■ during the night in tho western districts, and some, rain fell in Westland. At 9 a.m. to-day It was also showery at Stophen's Island. In the East Coast districts arid north of Auckland conditions have remained fair to flue.
