BRITAIN AND FRANCE
RUMOURED ABANDONMENT NOT TO BE REGARDED British Official Wlrclesa. (Received 10th September, 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Bth September. Reports current in tho Press that tho Anglo-French compromise regarding naval disarmament has been abandoned may be disregarded. The proposals are still beforo tho American, Italian, and Japanese Governments to which they were submitted some time ago. They were designed solely to facilitate progress in the Preparatory Commission for Disarmament, where advance had been held up by tho differences between tho British and French views regarding methods to effect naval limitation. hx place of their two existing drafts the British and French experts were able to agree on ono draft, which was thereupon submitted for consideration to the other Powers chiefly concerned. It has been repeatedly emphasised that all other Powers concerned at Geneva must eomo into agreement, if it is to bo effective, and that otherwise tho proposals fall to the ground, in which event the search for accord would have to be resumed along other lines. The Powers to which the AngloFrench agreement have been submitted have not yet expressed their views as to its suitability or otherwise as a basis of discussion.
