RHINELAND QUESTION

INTEREST AT GENEVA

WATCHING THE PRINCIPALS

Australian Press Asioclitlon. LONDON, 6th Sept. Publicists and Press throughout Europe are closely watching Germany's restlessness over the Ehineland occupation and saw a deep significance in the meeting of M. Briaud and Herr Mueller at Geneva. Curiously, M. Briand was at pains to deny that the Ehineland negotiations had been begun,, but in a statement to the Press he admitted that the Bhineland was naturally mentioned among the questions being prclimuij arily reviewed as possibly arising between France and Germany. Curiously also a British official wireless message circulated after the interview referred to the interview only as a process of arranging, but seized upon the exact argument regarding the evacuation. which M. Briand used. A hundred and ' fifty journalists waited in the hall of the Hotel de 3 Bergues to hear Herr Mueller's versioa from bis own lips, but Herr Mueller, instead of taking the lift as expected, walked down the staircase out of the hotel, and had reached his motor-car and gone before the journalists grasped the situation. Therefore only a brief statement was available from the German delegation. It is learned that M. Briand intends to return Herr Mueller's visit. A remark by Herr Mueller after the interview makes it clear that he is hopeful that a round-table meeting will ultimately be hold, attended by himself, M. Briand, and representatives of Britain, Belgium, and Italy. la view of the British official wireless message and M. Briand's statement, it would appear that the matter rests with Belgium and Italy. It is regarded as certain that Herr Mueller will now acquaint Lord Cushcndun, Signor Scialo.jn, and M. Ilyams with the German viewpoints, wliile M. Briand is communicating with Paris.
