MINE TROUBLE SETTLED
"A GLOOMY OUTLOOK" Mr. E. Semple returned to Wellington yesterday from the West Coast, where he has been for the past fortnight representing the New Zealand Labour Party with Mr. L. Glover (representing the Alliance of Labour). Messrs. Semple and Glover were called upon by the miners to assist negotiations with a view to setting a strike which hid been in existence for twelve weeks at the Cascade Colliery, Westport. "After several days of negotiation," said Mr. Semplo to a "Post" reporter to-day, '' we were able to bring about a satisfactory settlement." Mr. Semple said that the outlook on the West Coast.was very bad. There had been discharged from Blackball mine 170 single men, and the Paparoa mine was practically closed down. The Millerton mine was working only four dayß a fortnight, and J here were rumours of serious trouble. The outlook for the mining industry was gloomy.
