CYCLE ROAD RAGING

♦ BIG EVENTS THIS MONTH ■N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS Amateur cyclists in various pavts of the Dominion are at present preparing for a series o£ big eventß to be held during the next few weeks. In Wellington and elsewhere the sport is making splendid headway, and for all competitions large fields are the order. Entries for coming events promise to be a record, and the standard of competition will be high, particularly I in those events in which the leading cy- J clists of New Zealand will be taking part. The Wellington provincial championship was decided last Saturday, and in this 0. IHett gained fastest time. To-day the local cyclists had a spell from competition, but they are keeping up their preparation for the Palmerstou North-Wellington and other races. Wellington will have a number of representatives in the 50-mile road race between Palmerston and Wanganui next Saturday. Among those who have entered are Flett, Webber, and Gane. The New Zealand 50-mile championship cycle road race is to be held on the following Saturday, the course being from Wellington to Mungaroa and back. This event is being decided under the auspices of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, with the Port Nicholson Club carrying out the arrangements. The race is to start and finish in Jervois quay, near the Central Fire Brigade Station. Entries close next Saturday with Mr. H. D. London (the hon. secretary). Auckland will be represented by the present 50-mile champion, J. H. Wade, and M. P. Byrnes. Among a number of competitors from Canterbury will be F. Grose, who . has been showing good form since recovering ,from the injuries sustained in a bad spiJJ some time ago. Lukey, who represented New Zealand in the last Colac to Melbourne race, will also be representing Canterbury. Wellington's leading cyclists will, o£ course, be taking part, and there will be competitors from the various districts in which the sport is established. The Palmerston North to Wellington road race, a distance of about 102 miles, is to be held a week after the New Zealand championship, and for this event there will also be a big entry, including most of the riders taking part in the championship.
