"ABSURD REGULATION"
RED REFLECTORS ON CARS DESCRIBED AS A TAD • (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post,") DUNEDIN, 30th August. The necessity for red reflectors on the rear of motor-cars was vigorously denied at a meeting of the Otago Motor Club. The president (Mr. A. E. Ansell) stated that when in Wellington he had told the Public Works Department that he considered' it an absurd regulation. The Department had replied that public opinion had asked for it. However, the Department was unable to recall any cases where, an accident had occurred through the tail light going out, so Mr. Anscll had asked them why the reflector should be used. '. , The executive decided to bring up a remit ,at the meeting of the South Island Motor Union requesting that the Government should withdraw the regulation.. If the idea was insisted upon, it would cost the motorists of New Zealand £.40,000 for what ho considered was an absolute fad on the part of some of the departmental heads. Referring to tail lights, tho chairman said that, although this Government did not intend to be arbitrary in the matter, it had been agreed that tail lights should in future be on tho-right-hand side.of oars, and it was understood that the manufacturers were to be informed accordingly. It was not necessary -that driving mirror<j should be1 placed on the outside of tho car, ifwhen inside they gave a clear view of the roar traffic this would be quite sufJicient. ' _ ]
