LETTERS IN BRIEF
■ Ketemng to the published statement that law students in New Zealaud are out of proportion to the population, "Commercial Traveller," ju a letter to "The Post," maintains that the same thing applies to shops, ;'l. am well aware (he ■■■■writes) that no Government is to blame, but it is going to create a class of unemployment which will ba difficult" to deal with. In the Hutt Valley and Petpne I counted 49 shops in one trade, which is out\>f all proportion, I am told the spending power is greater here than in the Old Country, but I maintain, it is less, because many working mon earning from £i to £5 per week are paying £2 and £2 10s rent, and the rents in are only 7s Cd to IBs. Is not this Ponjinipn overdone with distributors. The value of produce, I admit, shows a pleasing increase, and if thq same energy was displayed in producing as is put forward by the traders, what a different country this would be. Thousands of young fellows will be wanting town billets shortly, and where they are going to be placed is a mystery." "Ratepayer writes:^"At the, present time in Wallace street thq authorities are widening the road. About 'S(t'(tin is being taken off the present fgptpatl], leaving roughly about 4ft Din in some pieces. I am told the widening is being^ done to meet tlie traffic that will pbs§ to the Show. How is a qiwd pf people going to walk along on a 4ft Cm footpath? If pne steps, off the path'he. js liable to be knocked down. .... Ratepayers ought to wake up and voice their opinions. A few months pga a petition was signed by the residents of Wallace street and vicinity. The footpaths were patched up, but now have, bgn broken up' again."
