CARTOONIST'S YOUTH
LOW'S EARLY CAREER (From "The Post's" Representative.) ■ LONDON, 13th July. Mr. David Low, the omineiit cartoon Ist contributes an amusing autobiography to " T.P. 's Weekly.'' In this he traces his'-eavly.'-career in Ohristchurch. "For a weekly published in Wellington- which specialised :in crime," he vmtes, "I did Gourt sketches, and one morning I was ignbminiously turned out of ■■ Court liy an orderly because I was in short trousers and looked too young to remain during the hearing of a divorce case. I earned—very hardly —the sum of f>s for sketching the victim in' a nnirder case, and,.for the proprietor of a local 'fun , city 'I did fifteen stereoscopic views of • the , BurnsJohnson fight to grace a ,penny-in-the-slot machine. A little later there: was disturbance at. that 'fun city' in the course •of which a -woman was shot dead. The proprietor sent . for ,me again to do him. a Bories. about; the shooting, but--while I appreciated the compliment, I declined. I engaged upon an anti-smoking cartoon campaign in the.Salvation Army 'War Cry.' "I attended the .Canterbury School of Art till I found that it was doing mo more harm than good as a black-and-white artist/ Art schools . have a tendency to strip you of your original approach, and to substitute a reverence for conventional technique;, for which reason, amongst others, I never would advise a journalist artist to stop long at any one of them."
