BIG PROFITS ALLEGED (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, 29th August. At a meeting of the Otago Motor Club, tho president (Mr. A. E. Ansell) quoted figures to show that petrol companies in New Zealand were making an unreasonable profit. The speaker said that with the exception of Spain and Italy, petrol was dearer here than in any other country in tho world. On outlining arguments raised by petrol companies to show that their prices were not exorbitant, he said the chief one was tho high cost of distribution to a scattered population. After discussion, tho following resolution was carried unanimously: "That tho Government bo requested to institute a Board of Trade inquiry in order to determine whether or not petrol companies operating on the Now Zealand market are obtaining more than a fair and reasonable rate of: commercial prolit."
