AT DANNEVIRKE
MEMORIAL TO COMICAL .STARBOARD LIGHT SCORES \ ' (By Telegraph.) '(Special to "The Evening Post.") DANNEVIRKE, This Day. The Spring Meeting of the Dannevirke Bating Club was held yesterday in dull, bleak weather, but this was preferable to the rain, which, after falling for a couple of days, ceased only a few hours prior to the opening of the meeting. As expected, the race track was very, heavy, but did not cut up very badly. The attendance was not good, and in consequence I the totalisator figures showed • a decline of just over 20 per cent., compared with a limited amount handled last year, when £10,347 passed through the totalisator, against £8155 yesterday. As the officials of this club are most hospitable and look after their patrons in a manner- unsurpassed, it appears strange that the club's gatherings are not more popular. The Awapuni rider, R. J. Mackie, rode three .Winners out of six rides. GLENGARRY HACK HURDLES. Cohesion and Royal Elm were the only runners supported to any extent for the Glengarry Hack Hurdles, and this judgment proved correct, as the pair had th€ finish to themselves. Royal Elm was smartest to begin, while Jackaroo lost a dozen lengths. After going a furlong, Lieutenant Bill joined Royal Elm in tho lead, and the pair were just clear of Cohesion passing the stands. With three i'urlongs to go, Cohesion joined Royal Elm in the lead, and the pair raced over the last two flights of jumps practically on terms, fcut in the run home Royal Elm beat Cohesion by half a length, with Lieutenant Bill eight lengths away third, followed by Crifihna and Kempsey. Looking remarkably well, Royal Elm gave an excellent exhibition of quick, clean fencing, and with further experience should develop into a useful performer over hurdles. Cohesion made a big effort to win under his substantial impost, and lad he jumped the final obstacle as cleanly as Royal Elm, he may have won. Kilia, looking robust in condition, made his debut »s a jumper, but was not prominent. TIRATU MAIDEN STAKES. • Veronese was installed favourite for the Tiratu Maiden Stakes, but carried only sixty-one tickets more than Charmaline, while Kinross was also well supported. When the tapes rose, Roburant, Marica, Merry Mixture, and Sambur were conspicuous, but after going a short distance Marica took the lead, being followed by Charmaline, Teremoana, and Veronese. With two furlongs to go Charmaline passed Marica and led into the straight, and, running on well under vigorous riding, won by three-parts of a length from Teremoana, who beat Marica by half a length; Veronese was a fair fourth, then followed Gambler, Delude, Whakaari, and Kinross. The winner began smartly, and, hunted; right out by T. Green, just had enough in reserve to hold off Teremoar/a and Marica, but as this pair were well placed throughout the race, no excuse can be offered for their defeat. Veronese, who finished fourth, looked well, and also had a good run, but is evidently only very moderate. Gambler, who, finished fifth, was badly left at barrier rise. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Arrow Lad was installed a pronounced favouritei for , the President's Handicap. He'carried almost twice the amount mii vested on Lin Arlington (second choice), , while Starboard Light, Dreamy, and Miss Pat were evenly supported. From an excellent start,' Miss Pat, Starboard Light, Arrow Lad, and Lin Arlington ran almost in line for over a furlong. Starboard Light then went out in front, and -was six lengths clear of Arrow Lad and Dreamy at the straight entrance. Over the concluding stages of the race Starboard Light drew' further away and won by eight lengths from Dreamy, who beat Arrow Lad by. half a length, with Miss Pat a close fourth. Starboard Light looked somewhat robust, but this did not prevent his making an exhibition of the field. Dreamy finished on and beat Arrow Lad, who looked ■well, blit the. heavy going and weight Lelped to anchor him. Miss Pat is rather •mall to' show to advantage under the heavier scale of w.eights. UMUTAOROA HACK HANDICAP. Kalos carried fifty-seven tickets more than Grey Mist to be installed favourite for the Umutaoroa Hack Handicap. AbiBogne and Arrow Boy were best backed of the other starters. Takutama began smai^tly when the .barrier rose, being followed by Grey Mist, Kalos;, Arrow Boy, and Gold. Bag. Racing into the straight Takutaraa was well clear of Grey Mist jind Arrow Tioy, but at the half distance the leader .weakened,- and in a good finish Grey Mist won by a length from Abieogne, with Arrow Boy half a length away third, and Tanagra a close fourth; Then followed Kalos, Takutama, and Gold Bag. Grey Mist1 showed courage, and is now •taying: on better than formerly. Abisogne was not well placed in the early stages of the race, but finished better than the ■winner, and was uuluckynot to win. lArrpw Boy ran quite a good race, and Tanagra was running on at the end, but Takutama stopped badly over the last hundred yards. . NEAGLE MEMORIAL HANDICAP. Royal Game was entrusted with a few tickets more than No Favours in the
Neagle -Memorial Handicap, then after a big drop,, came Comical.. The start was. a good one, ■Comical being in the lead passing the stands from Royal Game, Princess Ronnie, and Shining Armour. Racing up the back stretch Comical was eight lengths clear of Royal Game, who was a similar distance in front of No Favours. In the.straight Royal Game closed on Comical, and when well down the straight appeared to'have a chance, but over the last few chains Comical held his own and beat Royal Game by two lengths, with Shining Armour four lengths away third, followed by No Favours, Atareria, and Princess , Ronnie. Comical looked. remarkably bright when one considers that Jie has'just finished! a trying steoplechasing career, but all the , same'it does not speak well for the other competitors that Comical could make all his own running to win comfortably. He was handled artistically by R. Reed. Royal Ganio had every chance, and in a slow run race, again failed to finish well over'a ten furlong course. Shining Armour was considered short of work, but ran a fair race, but although fourth No Favours' form was a disappointment to his connections. DANNEVIRKE HACK STEEPLE-. CHASE. ; Master Arch was a good favourite for the Danneyirke Hack Steeplechase, Handy being second choice. Handy led over the' first fence'from; Haumaiire and Padriagh.
At'the next fence.(the first of the double) Captain Wai fell,'and Haumarire followed suit •at the next jump. Handy led up the back stretch-by several lengths from Padriagh, Stymie, and Scrap Iron. At the stand double on the second circuit Padriagh was the leader,- but the next jump brought him down. Scrap Iron then took chaTge from Handy and Birkbeck, but Handy again went to the front three furlongs from home, and, getting over the succeeding fences.without mishap, won easily from Scrap Iron, who headed olf Birkbeck in the run home from the last jump. Master Arch was fourth. Although the . fences were light, they proved quite formidable for the class that raced; Handy gave a good exhibition of jumping, and won with a lot in hand.
RUAHINE HANDICAP. j Treshani "finished up a decided favourite for the Ruahine Handicap, carrying almost twice as much as Beaumont, wlio was next in demand. The tapes rose to an excellent start, Beaumont being the first to show out from Our. Jack, Gardant, and Birkie. The last-named went up fast, and, passing, the four furlong post, was racing with Our Jack in the lead. They were followed by Beaumont and Gardant. At the home | turn Gardant and -Birkie were in charge, but with half a furlong to go the field closed up, and in a fine finish Gardant won | by half a length from Beaumont, with Polonett,.Tresham, and Morose all very close up. Gardaut registered her best performance, but may be called lucky to have held off late runs by several of the runners. Beaumont finished well, on the inside, but suffered through not having sufficient room. Polonett and Trosham were each going better at the finish than the dividend payers. HARRIS HACK HANDICAP. Pale Star was a short-priced odds-on favourite for' the Harris Hack Handicap, Grand ' National being second favourite. The early running, was made by Mount ' Shannon, who was followed by Piropono, Wet Winter, and Grand National. At the half-mile post Piropono took charge, and was followed into the straight by Grand National. > Once' in a -line for the judge Pale Star' came along with a good run and won well -from Kindle, with Grand National an indifferent third, and Piripono a poor fourth. . ■ Pale Star was backed as a certainty, and so it proved, as he gave the leaders a big start .over the last four furlongs, and won with something to spare. Kindle ran a fair racei but Grand National did not finish quite as well as expected. Results:— , Glengarry Hack Hurdles, of 100 soys; one mile and a half.—2 Hoyal Elm, 9.2 (C. M'Gov-
