CROSSING KEEPER
SPLITTING UP THE COST "It is the most dangerous level crossing in the country," declared Mr, A. C. Bussell, chairman of the Waipukurau County Council, at a meeting of tho Hawkes Bay Highways Council in Napier, when the subject of the much discussed Ruataniwha Street railway crossing was advanced. It was reported that it was estimated to cost £210 annually to maintain a crossing keeper there to signal the approach of trains. Of this the Railway Department would pay half and tho Main Highways Board and the Waipukurau Borough Council the remainder in proportions of £63 and £42 on a £1 10s to £.1 basis. ,;■ Mr. Russell remarked that the Borough Council was circularising the adjoining counties-—Patangata, Waipukurau, and Waipawa—to contribute £10 each to the cost, and expressed the hope that they would see their way to do so. It would protect their ratepayers using the crossing. : :.■!.: -He stated that the .Waipukurau County would make its contribution.
