LEASES AT HANMER

1■ . ■ ■ ♦ — A Bill concerning Crown leases at Hanmer was introduced into the House of Representatives by Governor-Gen-bral's Message yesterday afternoon. ; The Minister of Lands (the Hon. A. D. M'Leod), in reply to Mr. G. W. Forbes (Hurunui), stated that there wore a number of Crown leases in the Hanmer district and some of them j would not terminate for fifteen or twenty years. Tho aim of the Bill was to give the lessees a better tenure. This could be done by tho lessees getting the right of perpetual renewal of a portion of their leases and surrendering the balance. If a can held, say, 10 acres he could get a better tenure for two acres and surrendering the remaining eight, thus allowing other settlers on the area ot secure an improved tenure too. . . .
