UNCOMPLIMENTARY RETORTS.

An unexpected retort was made by Colonel Allen Bell (Bay of Islands) in the House of Representatives last night in reply to an interjection while the speaker was dealing with the question of land settlement. ; Colonel Bell was referring, to the difficulties of the backblock settler thirty and more years ago, and was comparing prices of staple commodities in use on the farm with those of to-day. He went on to point out that in those days wages were about 6s a day. . Mr.-P. N, Bartram (Gr-ey Lynn): "I'That is what you want to-day, isn't Colonel Bell (emphatically): "No, it is not what I want. I was pointing out tho conditions of thirty years ago, and when I heard that sound from my friend on my right my mind flashed back over tho centuries, and I fancied I heard that sound which emanated from the ancient and hirsute animal owned by' Balaam." (Laughter.) . A little later Colonel Bell was interrupted while' fie :wa's-quoting,- amidst laughter, the number of pigg produced in the district he represents. "If some of my honourable friends from the South will come up and have a look at them," he.replied quickly,' referring to the pigs, "they will immediately recognise them as relatives." ■
