RANFURLY SHIELD
"We are responsible for the control of the Ranfurly Shield," remarked Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, at > last • night's meeting of the Management Committee, "and it is for us to decide finally which shall be shield matches. We must protect unions and it does not matter to us which union wins the shield." A request from South Canterbury for further information regarding a section of tha Ranfurly Shield rules was under notice, South Canterbury being the challengers in the first shield match this season, j It was stated during discussion on the matter that the holders could take the shield on tour after it had been held by them for two years. In the event of South Can-1 terbury defeating Canterbury in the first shield match this season, it would be quite in order for Wairarapa, who would be on their1 southern tour following that match, to challenge South Canterbury, Should Wairarapa win the shield on tour they would not be required to play for it until they returned home. It was agreed that in this case it would be unfair to Wairarapa to defend'a challenge from Auckland on the clay following the Wairarapa team's return from the South. i
