SUMMER TIME

THIS YEAR'S BILL WHAT DO MEMBERS THINK? Considerable interest will bo evinced this session in the fate of the Summer Time Bill Mr. T. K. Sidey has given notice that he intends to introduce. It is known that the majority, of members of the House, of Representatives which secured the scheme a fia.l last summer i 3 not so strong as it was on that occasion; indeed, it is said that opponents of the measure now have a sufficient majority to defeat it. The declared intention of the promoter of the Bill, as expressed last session, was that after giving the proposal a trial for one summer ho proposed to introduce a Bill giving it permanency. The exact lines of the Bill to be introduced this session have not yet been decided upon, but it is understood that the promoter intends to ascertain the general feeling of members in. the hope that he may be able to include a clause giving daylight saving permanent effect during the sum- ■ mer months, and that in any case he will endeavour to secure the passago of the Bill with a clause making the scheme operative one.'month' earlier than was the case last year. This would mean that the legislation would- have effect on the first Sunday in October instead, of the first Sunday in November. ■..■.•' ' ■ '' ■■ In the House,of Representatives this afternoon, Mr. Sidey introduced his Bill, which was read a first time and set down for second reading on Wednesday, 25th July.
