A GREAT TENOR.
The triumph of Alfred O'Shea at the Town Kail last night was complete. No more artistic tenor has ever sung in Wellington. O'Shea Is not merely a vocalist. In operatic arias ho gayo, a dramatic portrayal of the' rolo he assumes, and in ballads he tells tho story, holding a perfect balanco between \miislc and words. O'Shea has also a senso of humour, and there is a pleasing lilt in his voice when tho song demands it. ■ He aroused great enthusiasm last night with tjio aria, "Salut d'Amour," from Gounod's "Faust," and his magnificent singing of "Agnus Dei" (Bizet), assisted by Bernard Page at the organ and Miss Claire Hartge, violinist, was a memorable performance. The number had to bo repeated, > and there was rapturous applause for Handel's "Largo" and Massenet's "Elegle." The beautiful aria, "E Lucevan le Stelle," was given ' a lyric charm in its descriptive passages. Encores were numerous, and included "She is Far From the Land," "The Minstrel Boy," "The Meeting of the Waters," "Tom Bowling," "Mother Machree," "Kathleen Mavourneen," "Passing By," "La Donna Mobile" from "Rigoletto," and "Home, Sweet Home." The solo items of Miss Claire Hartge, violinist, and Miss Kathleen Fitzgerald showed musical insight. ' . . A return concert win be given on 28th July.
