AN OPEN MARKET
NEARBY FARMERS' VIEWS PARLIAMENTSY ACTION Steps will probably be taken by tho Wellington Suburbs' Farmers' Association during tho coming session of Parliament to endeavour to improve the conditions under which they are working. Speaking at the annual meeting of the association to-day, Mr. J. Purchase said it was necessary that they should again approach Parliament during the coming session in order that their position should bo consolidated. Ho thought they should ask for nothing less than an open market. At tho present time they had a Government that was sympathetic towards tho farmers of the Dominion, and, in view of the approaching election, they should lose no time in putting forward their case. No one knew what might happen after the election. Tho City Council had lime and again declined to supply near- ! by farmers who were short of milk, and the result had been that the nearby farmers had lost customers. The City Council at the present time was a law unto itself, but he was glad to say that the Prime Minister had informed him that the council would have to come under tho law in tho same way as the nearby farmers. Mr. S. Luxton said that he was sick and tired of going to Parliament, but if they wcro going to get anything more ho would support action being taken. Mr. S. Bowler: "I think Parliament is just about sick of us." He thought it would bo a mistake to approach Parliament again. They had obtained all that they were likely to got. Mr. Purchase said it was essential that they should Itcep vigilant, for they never know the time when steps would bo taken to imposo further penalties. "The only way to keep a man honest is to prevent him from being dishonest," said Mr. Purchase. Mr. Bowler said that the City Council milk supply should come under the inspection of tho Health Department in the same way as the nearby farmers. The meeting gave Mr. Purchase authority to represent tho case of tho nearby farmers before Parliament, if necessary.
