THE WEATHER
«> RAIN LIKELY Since last night, there Has been a rather sharp-rise in pressure ' from ' Cook Strait southwards, as the result of the rapid advance of an anticyclone over the southern Tasman Sea. In the Northern districts, however, barometers have recorded little movement owing •to an extensive cyclone being still situated over the northern Tasman Sea. With the rise in pressure the northerly winds which prevailed yesterday have since given place to southerlies in the south of Cook Strait. Fairweather ruled yesterday, but during the night the conditions became somewhat unsettled, . some light to moderate scattered rain falling in many districts. A trace fell locally early this morning. The indications are for north-east to east winds' north of New Plymouth and Napier, and.east to south-easterly elsewhere, becoming strong and reaching gale force at places. Generally cloudy and unsettled weather, with rain in most districts is expected, but mainly fair to cloudy in Westland and Otago. Stormy conditions and some heavy rain are likely in the northern and east coast districts of the North Island.
