MARIST BEATS HUTT.

After a rather ragged and uninspiring game, played, before a small number of spectators on the Hutt Recreation Ground, Marist easily eliminated Hutt in the first round of the Chatham Cup, -winning by three goals to one. The teams were:— Marist—Hickey, Fitzgerald. Cnvruthei-s, Burke, Thomas, Mulholland, Cudby, jM'Jilligptt, Marchment, Condon, Barton. Hutt—Butland, Magee, Logic, M'Dougall, T. Chapman, K. Chapman, Batchelor, Lowry, T. Logic, Keiller, Cartmell. It was fairly obvious from the kick-off which was the better team, Marist being the winners all through. Their forwards displayed far more combination than was the ease with the Hutt vanguard, and the spoiling tactics of their backs wore too much in evidence to allow Hutt much chance of winning. Neither team.played well, the ground was sticky and the ball heavy. Wild kicking, doubtless with good intentions but with abortive results, was indulged in too much by the Hutt players. In the first spell Marist established the commanding lead of three goals to nil, Marchment being responsible for the first two and Cudby for the third, both these players being conspicuous amongst the forwards. Condon and Barton were often in the limelight, too. Hutt started the second spell as if they intended to wipe off the deficit, but erratic shooting nullified their chances. Half way through the second spelll, however, Lowry made the hopes of Hutt supporters rise by netting a nice one in the corner. Almost immediately afterwards Hutt looked like scoring again, but the effort died away. Marist seemed' content to hold their own, several times nearly increasing their lead, but Butland in goal and Magee1 at full back put up a sound defence. Two players of the latter's calibre in the team would have made all the difference. The game finished with Marist still holding the upper hand, the score being: Marist 3, Hutt 1. Mr. D. Stirritt was au effective referee.
