REGULAR MEALS

MESSAGES TO SHIPS OBTAINING BEARINGS (Received 2nd June, 9.30 a.m.) MONTREAL, Ist June. Messages received stated that tho crew of the airplane took meals regularly, frequently drinking stimulating draughts of coffee from thermos bottles. Ulm was at the controls for a period after midnight, while Smith first slept, then operated the radio. Warner had been sending constantly from the time of the take-off until Smith relieved him. As the r.irplane drew farther away from San Francisco, the signals became fainter to the coast radio stations, but by the time they died out altogether on this side of the Pacific they were beginning to be audible to Hawaiian stations, and thereafter the Southern Cross addressed its messages to ships at sea,

or to stations on the islands. A message received shortly after 1 a.m. stated: "Eeceived radio bearings from s.s. Maliko at 12.50 a.m. Places us on latitude 29.35deg north, longitude 143.45deg or 144.45deg west. Speed 79 to SO knots." At 3 a.m. the airplane signalled that it was ■ still in the air, but there was no message from the flyers with this signal. This procedure was repeated. •■ (Eeceived 2nd June, 10 a.m.) MONTREAL, Ist June. A later message said: —"We thought that ■we would sight land an hour ago, but have not done so yet." No message giving the exact location of the airplane had been received for some time, which wa3 taken to mean that the navigator of the Southern Cross was uncertain regarding his position.
