■—• • I STORM NOW MODERATING Tho centre of the cyclone responsible for the wild weather of the last few days has now moved away to the southeast of New Zealand, and the pressure distribution' hag taken on the characteristic of the westerly type of weather, although strong gradients are still marked in the barometric charts. On Tuesday strong northerly and westerly winds, accompanied by stormy weather and heavy rain, were very much in cvii dence, rivers rising rapidly to the point of flood in some instances. In the Wairarapa some places had as much as three inches of rain in the twenty-four hours ending at 9 a.m. this morning, Wellington escaping lightly with but 21 points. The strongest gust of, wind recorded at Kelburn occurred at 4;30 p.m. yesterday, when one of 58 miles an hour was experienced. This morning a decrease' in the force of the wind was evident, and the barometer was rising again everywhere.' The indications are for strong northwesterly to westerly winds; which will back to south-westerlies with cooler temperatures. Changeable and showery weather is likely, but on the east coast of the North Island there is likely to be a more marked improvement. Locally the gale played; havoc with some exposed gardens, and some loose tiles in places descended from roofs. Owing to the bad weather experienced further north the Limited express froml Auckland arrived in Wellington yesterday nearly two hours lat.e... . , ■
