THEFT OF RING
A TAXI-DRIVER'S OFFENCE How a taxi-driver who posed as a racehorse-owner store a single-stone diamond ring, valued at £750, the property of Jenness nad Partridge, was detailed in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Trevor Leonard Eichard Cunningham, alias Beginald Smith, alias Jack Smith, aged 28, pleaded guilty to the offence. He was represented by Mr. W. E. Leicester. | Frederick Jenness, a partner in the j firm of Jenness and Partridge, said that tho accused came into his shop about 3.30 p.m. on 17th of this month and asked to be allowed to look at a big diamond ring in the window, Jhe price of which was marked at £ 750. Witness took tho. ring from tho window and handed it to the accused, who said he was Mr. Lotvry, the racenorseowner, of Hawkes Bay. The accused took tho ring to the door, presumably to see it, better, and then ran away ; with it. Witness gave chase, 'but it was not until later in the afternoon that tho accused was found. Detective Jarrold stated that he found Cunningham in the bar of anhotel in Willis street, showing tho ringto someone. On seeing him, the accused appeared to put the ring into one of his socks. When questioned, lie denied having the ring, and when witness told him chat he was going to search him, he resisted, and objected to being removed from the bar. "I' found the ring in his sock on the right foot," said the detective, "and the accused said: 'What a fool I was to flash it in there. I suppose you will 'lag' me for this.' " Cunningham was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, and an order was made for the return of the ring to the owners.
