RACING AT HASTINGS

CARD FOR TO-MORROW Tt is doubtful if better acceptances liavo been received for an antmnn meeting at Hastings for some considerable time. The field left in the Poukawa Hack Handicap is venlly embarrassingly large, but as the safety number for the course at six furlongs is 25 it is only two over the limit, and no doubt a division will be avoided. -The track should bo in excellent order. The first race is timed for noon. This is the MANGATARATA HANDICAP HURDLES, of HO soys; one mile and three-quarters.

Red Fuchsia and Pencils will bo a bracket on the totalisator, and backers are likely to make the combination a solid favourite. Braeman may upset calculations. HIGH-WEIGHT HACK HANDICAP, or 110 soys; one milo and a furlong.

In a. very poor quality field Clavers may do as well as any o£ them unless the top weight really comes back to form. This pair appeal more than the rest. .NURSERY HANDICAP, or MO aovs; live fiirJongs and a half.

Although Miss Ransom was a triflp disappointing at Aivnpuni her class appears decidedly superior to this h'elu, and she should not Jack friends at 8.11. Marion's Birthday. Jlillais, and Briar Root hare all handicap form, and tile light--weights, Dark Girl and Clarendon, have shown promise. However, iUiss Ransom's class. is superior so far, and she insist have preference. The next best may In Millfiis--. Then crimes the classic event, the JIAWKKS I!AY STAKKK, of ll)!l siivs : «cl;;lit-ror-axc ivilli p.'iiiiilics: *•:< fiirliiii^a.

est for the three top weights will all have friends, especially the old Martian gelding, The" Hawk. Great Chatter does not come in any too well with his penalty, but that is not to say he is out of it. Raasay on his home track, despite his recent disappointments, should be the best of the two-year-olds. Raasay, • The Hawk, and Joy King, may show up best. The principal handicap follows, the HAWKES BAY CUP, of 450 soys; one mile and a half.

No doubt the Vertigern—David Garrick bracket will be first choice, and Vertigern has developed into such a good-class horse now that he is worthy of No. 1 saddlecloth. Lady Desmond should be a better mare than she was in Christchureh. Twelve furlongs seem beyond Tresham. The class may be too good for the Perle de Leon—Gaze combination, and of the lightweights Addlepate may be a possibility. At the same time not many regulars will want to be against Vcrtigern.

Good beginners like Aston, Helotis, and Fee Simple should command respect in this event. Luck may play a part in the big field, but outside the three named nothing takes the eye as much as Kahu Ariki, whose form at Trentham when she won was good enough to account for these. AUTUMN HANDICAP, of 140 soys; one mile and one furlong.

Vesperus looks the part on his recent form, and should dispute favouritism with King Midas. Lin Arlington may run out the journey, and is favourably handicapped, but Vesperus seems very well in. The card concludes with the sprint event, the POKANGAHAU HANbICAP, of 190 soys; six furlongs.

Koyal Damon cannot be counted out for all his 9.13, but there should be plenty of support for First Acre, and Kaiti, especially as First Acre, with T. Webster up, no doubt will have the Apprentice allowance claimed for him. Plain Sailing is a possible lightweight for a surprise, biit on recent form First Acre and Koyal Damon stand out prominently.
