PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP BAIN SPOILS PLAY A deceptively fine morning at Herotaunga turned to a steady northerly rain shortly after 10 o'clock for the Wellington Provincial Tournament today, but the clouds lifted after lunch and a suggestion that play should be postponed was not agreed to. Seventy-two entries were received from the Miramar, Waiwetu, Hutt, Waipukurau, Banui, Manawatu, Glasgow (Scotland), Mornington, Hastings, and.Middlemore Clubs. Play to-day consisted of two rounds of 18 holes, the first 16 to qualify for the championship. There was also a stroke handicap. The greens were heavy at the close "of the morning round, and play in the rain was more in the nature of a penance than a pleasure. ' Scoring was rendered more diiflcult because the greens were fast to commence with, but in the soaking and occasional "casual" water the end of the round presented an entirely different set of conditions. The best scores, nevertheless, were remarkably good. H. A. Black (Miramar) led with a line 73, compiled as f0110w5:—554534363 (38) 444634433 (35)— total 73. The next best score was that of H. P. F. Blundell (Wellington) 77, and then followed J. H. Drake (Miramar) 79. The leading scores to hand in the first round up till 1 o'clock were: — H. A. Black (Miramar) ..:.. 73 H. P. F. Blundell (Wellington) ... 77 J. H. Drake (Miramar) 79 E. L. Hales (Miramar) 80 J. W. Kland (AVellington) 80 H. J. Shanks (Mornington) .... 81 D. L. Whyto (Wellington) 81 I. M'Ewan (Wellington) 81 A. D. S, Duncan (Wellington) .... 82 J. B. M'Ewan (Wellington) 82 L. C. Hemery (Hutt) 83 J. B. Parker (Wellington) 83 B, 0. Chesney (Hutt) 84 E. B. Smith (Wellington) 85 M. Blundell (Hutt) 85 V. G.
